First, a disclaimer: I have known Jeanne Lyet Gassman for many years. She is a dear, greatly valued friend. I have followed her writing career, cheering her on, and am thrilled at the achievement of having this book published. I expected this book to be excellent, and it did not let me down. It provided me with a lot of food for thought. Set in the time of Jesus, it tells the story of a young pagan Gentile, born into poverty and cruelty. Disabled at the hand of his father and sold into slavery to a cruel master, he retains his humanity even when forced to take extreme actions in order to save his own life. More than once, through the author's vivid writing, I was brought to a point of either accepting or condemning his actions and being forced to wonder how I would respond in similar circumstances. I came to admire his strength, courage, and resourcefulness and also his instinctive kindness. I was intrigued by his view of Jesus, who, through much of the book, he viewed as being a serious threat to his future and well-being. But then how else would someone with his background and life experience see someone who is being proclaimed as a king and who is doing something entirely new in the world? The author's writing is beautiful and eloquent. Her characters are vivid and well-drawn. The story has unexpected twists and turns and ends in a way that is utterly satisfying. I was sorry to turn the last page, but I know there will be more excellent work by my good friend. I look forward to it!

This book was fascinating historically and was a great story! I was hooked from the very first paragraph and it kept me in suspense all the way to the end. I loved the characters, the themes of friendship, love, forgiveness and redemption, and how the story was interwoven with Biblical accounts of Jesus. I highly recommend this book.
Jesus told Judas to have the soldiers arrest him. Judas did not want to. Judas only did what he was told to do. So sad he has been vilified.
Gassman's story is an absorbing tale of one man's struggle with his conscious and his need to murder Jesus. The author paints such a vivid portrayal of both the times and the landscape that the reader is swept into a centuries old reality while turning the pages. Blood of a Stone bores inside human nature and reveals both our weaknesses and our moments of humanity. A fine read.
The first few chapters were a bit rough; sentences laid down that simply spit out information in a plodding, utilitarian manner. Eventually however, the author got into her creative mode and began to paint the story with prose. The result is a nicely done slice of life from an event that changed the world. It left me wanting more, and I enjoyed it immensely.
I've never read this genre of book before. I'm an addict!!! I became part of the story, my heart got involved with each character. I felt the pain, happiness, hopefulness, and every emotion that each character endured. I couldn't wait to pick up my book every day to read each chapter and feel what would happen next. I'm sad there's not another one to read, I hope this author continues with these characters.
A historical page turner, set in the time of Jesus and told from the limited point of view of an uneducated young man sold by his abusive father into slavery. Of personal interest to me was the description of the movement of people across the landscape of the time, and the reminders of the polyglot nature of that society, not to mention the sheer phenomenon of Jesus - his ability to command such large crowds before modern means of communication were available is astounding. The author must have really immersed herself in the landscape, objects, and milieu of the time to create such a believable time and place. Awesome! (and you don't need to be a Christian to enjoy it.)
Although author Jeanne Lyet-Gassman serves up authentic first century Palestinian food and drink, delivered by humans in period costume bearing the paraphernalia typical of the time, there is scarcely a moment to savor or digest any of it, as the protagonists and antagonists fly from one grisly form of adversity to the next, sometimes dying in the process. Only Jesus, playing Himself, stands in a globe of calm amid the madness that is everyone else's life. Meanwhile, the foolish become wiser, the weak become stronger, the evil meet their fate, and the most grotesque characters continue to linger in one's memory. It's a tour de force.
