Skin Deep A DarkWorld SkinWalker Novel T G Ayer 9781484836705 Books

"There was a razor-fine line between protector and vigilante, and right now I knew I was skating it blind. Funny thing was, I didn’t much care." So says Kailin (Kai) Odel, the kick-a** heroine in Skin Deep, the opener of TG Ayer's SkinWalker series. That pretty much sets the tone for this book with it's thrills and adventure, supernatural drug-dealing, renegade shifters and a sadistic shifter killer. There's even a well done budding romance between Kami and paranormal investigator (among other things I won't spoil by mentioning) Logan Westin. Great plot, great lead and supporting characters (friend and foe), great world-building and great writing equals a (you guessed it) great story.

I'm more than happy to recommend this story, with one minor caveat. If you stop at the end of chapter 42 you will have a perfectly good "Happily Enough for Now" ending that's totally suitable for the first book in a series. If you read through chapter 43 to the end of the book you won't get a better HEA but you will get a quasi-cliffhanger which is an enormous teaser for book 2. That wasn't a big deal for me as this book is so good that I'm definitely planning on reading book 2, hence my 5 star rating, but be warned if it's something you care about.

Skin Deep A DarkWorld SkinWalker Novel T G Ayer 9781484836705 Books Reviews

I totally fell for Ms. Ayer's writing style in her Valkerie series. I rarely purchase e-books anymore, (I am on disability and my husband is a gamer, so money is tight, nuff said) but I purchased the entire series. I have to say I am disappointed in the beginning book to this series. There are major holes in parts of the story, character development is weak for some, and the plotline seems disjointed to me. I don't know if this is a new editor for Ms. Ayer or if I expected too much. Instead of finishing the book in a day or two it took me a week. I just couldn't get engaged. I will finish the series because I know this is an awesome author, and everyone can have an off day. I truly hope the series gets better as we get further along.
While waiting for a novel in another one of this author's series I grabbed this one. I enjoy the freshness of her writing so much. I right away knew I had made the right choice in picking one of her books because even though Kailin is a shifter she is not your average one by no means. She is such a interesting character right away she has plunged me into this suspenseful adventure with her. This world is there but not with few knowing but it does effect those that do not know. now it gets my attention with a mystery that involves murder along with many other things in this novel. This author got the touch alright. She is not by herself in this matter she does get help from Logan another character that makes you go yum. I'm kidnapped to the time I reach the end of this one still not satisfied wanting more from this author.
Meet Kailin Odel SkinWalker, an Alpha of the Panther clan and a Wraith-hunter... oh and a social worker on the side. Ordinary humans have no idea they live side by side with the supernatural, and well.. the supes prefer it that way.

When Kai discovers the body of a murdered Walker she's stuck in the middle of kidnappings, drug-dealings, murders and pretty much total mayhem. On the bright side... she meets Logan Westin, a detective with the supernatural agency Omega. Doesn't hurt he's a fire mage, damn good looking and that they share and instant connection.

With both keeping secrets from each other, will they be able to put a stop to the madness before it's too late?

My take on the book
I rly like the world the author created for these series... As I've previously read two books of the SoulTracker series, I already know the general setting and ambience. Though this one depicts it as a darker, more forbidding place. Love it! I would recommend people to read this book first before starting on the SoulTracker series since they overlap in some of the books and just for the general feel of the world and characters.

The book was well written and pacing was good. There were enough 'calm moments' in between all the action for the actual story to unfold. As this is the first book of the series some more explaining was done, but to be honest, you hardly noticed it as it was very well integrated into the story.
Character development was good, with Kailin as our main character being the most fleshed out. We get to know some history and some facts about Logan, but as of yet he's still a bit shrouded in mystery (looking forward to finding out more about him in the prequel and of course next book!).

I voluntarily read an advanced reader copy of this book and I must admit, by now, the author has me hooked to the DarkWorld series with this one topping so far.
Urban fantasy lovers with a penchant for shifters, mages and some kick ass action.. be sure to pick this one up!
I picked this up as a free read and decided to read it because I needed something to "cleanse my palate" between cozy mystery novels and thought it was a novella. I didn't realize it was a full length novel till I was a couple chapters in. Whoops. I was pleasantly surprised at the interesting world that I discovered. The book implies that something happened in the recent past, hinting at an apocalyptic setting without being explicit about what exactly did happen. Maybe that will come in a later book.

I liked the different shifter groups and the interesting way the alpha designation is realized. I didn't like that we kept hearing about how tough Kailin supposedly was, and yet she kept getting her ass handed to her on a regular basis. Ooooh, a scary strong alpha.. who keeps ending up at the mercy of the bad guys. Whaa?

There is quite a backstory to the characters, and more time was spent on character building than world building. Plus the story ends with quite the cliffhanger. (And the preview for book 2 at the end did nothing to resolve it!! Rotten Teases.) Overall I liked the story, and though I'm not in a huge hurry to jump into book 2, I have added it to my list to watch for. I gave this book 3 stars.
