With kind and humble intent thou reprovest me, dearest brother, for having wished by hiding myself to fly from the burdens of pastoral care; as to which, lest to some they should appear light, I express with my pen in the book before you all my own estimate of their heaviness, in order both that he who is free from them may not unwarily seek them, and that he who has so sought them may tremble for having got them. This book is divided into four separate heads of argument, that it may approach the reader’s mind by allegations arranged in order—by certain steps, as it were. For, as the necessity of things requires, we must especially consider after what manner every one should come to supreme rule; and, duly arriving at it, after what manner he should live; and, living well, after what manner he should teach; and, teaching aright, with how great consideration every day he should become aware of his own infirmity; lest either humility fly from the approach, or life be at variance with the arrival, or teaching be wanting to the life, or presumption unduly exalt the teaching.

Excellent book, had never read St. Gregory before, and I found his wisdom to be timely, honest, and a pleasure to read. He is a great communicator.

With so many popular modern and postmodern books on church leadership, so often churches forget to seek out the Christian classics that speak to our present and future Church as it applies to local churches. St. Gregory the Great brings wisdom and discernment that all pastors and those persons with a vocation to the local church need to know. The Book of Pastoral Rule would be helpful for everyone discening their call to ministry, especially seminarians and theological students. The Book of the Pastoral Rule is timeless and a must read within the realm of church leadership.
The book was great and easy to read. You can see Gregory's passion and love towards God's people. Unfortunately, because this was in the early church, their exegesis is allegorical. Though most, if not all, of his teachings were biblical and true, it made me cringe at times.Throughout the book, I often thought to myself, "Oh there got to be a better passage that you can take from the NT than the one you uses Gregory."
Don;t get me wrong, what he is talking about is biblical and not some heresy. This book was great! The book showed Gregory's passion and love for God's people and the want for godly men to take to position of church office, instead of those who would abuse their power for greed and status. I would recommend everyone to read this book.

About the different titles
"Since its first translation into English in the ninth century we have continued to call this book 'Pastoral Care,' a title which is most probably derived from its opening words Pastoralis curae ... But the author, Gregory the Great, ... refers to it as 'Liber Regulae Pastoralis,' the 'Book of Pastoral Rule'" (page 3 of the introduction of the Henry Davis translation).
